A soft paste blue and white dish

18th century The dish has deep rounded sides with an everted rim and is painted in the center with an elaborately decorated flower pot on a stand containing pine tree, prunus, bamboo and a decorative rock. The cavetto is decorated with a diaper band interrupted by four geometric-shaped panels enclosing floral and cloud motifs. The rim is decorated with a cell border. The reverse is painted with four flower sprays and three lines around the rim and the foot. The base is inscribed with a six-character Chenghua mark within a double ring. 20.1 cm diameter   Provenance: A Dutch private collection, acquired prior to 1940   Two very similar dishes are illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Volume Two, London, 1994, pl. 749, where the author refers to the flower pot as penjing - a flowerpot with miniature bamboo, prunus, pine trees and decorative rocks. The combination of bamboo, prunus and pine tree is often referred to as the 'Three Friends of Winter', suihan sanyou, symbolising longevity and endurance.

WF 50 A parcel-gilt bronze group of Shoulao and deer

17th/18th century

The Immortal is seated sideways on his recumbent companion deer on a circular base, his right hand grasping one of the animal's thin antlers, his right hand holding a scroll. He is clad in long robes tied with a long string below his belly.
His hair is gathered in a knot at the back of his head suspending long ribbons covering his shoulders. The animal with one thin leg lifted and head turned back.
Areas of parcel gilding contrast with the deep brown bronze. The base is partly hollow and is finished with three pins which reveal that the figure was once attached to a larger object, probably a censer.

The smoothly polished stone has a dense pattern of mushroom-like fossil inclusions amid small circular roundels in gray, yellow and white on an opaque bluish-black body, causing a dramatic effect reminiscent of a moonscape, or the unfathomable sea, where the fossil inclusions unfurl like jellyfish, trailing through the depths.
