WF 112 A Recumbent Boy And Carp

十八/十九世紀 蜜蠟雕童子戲鯉

18/19th century

Length: 6.3 cm
Provenance: A Dutch private collection

Fish symbolise a wish for abundance and affluence, as the word for 'fish', yu 魚, is a homonym for yu 餘, meaning 'surplus'. Thus, a boy with a fish symbolises a wish for many children. The carp, li 鯉, has its own symbolic associations.

S 45 An Inside-painted Glass Snuff Bottle

1914 年 馬少宣家族 玻璃內畫「念書圖」鼻煙壺

Ma family
Dated jiayin year (1914)

The bottle is painted with four boys seated at a low table talking over books below an inscription reading nianshu tu 念書圖 (picture of studying), the reverse inscribed with a poem, dated jiayin dong ri 甲寅冬日, ‘a winter day in the year of jiayin’ (1914), with the signature of Ma Shaoxuan 馬少宣, followed by a red seal mark.
Height: 6.1 cm
Provenance: Clare Chu (formerly Lawrence), 1997
Janne Holmes, Australia

The poem may be translated as follows:

On the stone pillow and bamboo bed next to the paper screen,
I was tired, so I threw my book away and took a long nap.
I then awoke and smiled, for I heard the fisherman playing his flute on the waves.

Made in Beijing by Ma Shaoxuan

The boys depicted on the bottle are supposed to be
reading at the table. However, they are distracted by
chit-chat, and do not seem to be interested in the
books.
The poem refers to a person who threw away his book and preferred to sleep and listen to the music a fisherman played.
